The country house Atrio is located in Estreito da Calheta, just ten minutes drive from Calheta Beach up the hill on the edge of the forest. This is an ideal place to stay if you enjoy Levada walks which start just up the road from here, or if you prefer the cool mountain air to the city heat.
The country house is described by its owners, Uli and Emmanuelle Rall, as “An island on Madeira”. It’s an apt phrase. Their modern Quinta is rather like a private tropical island, a hideaway retreat half way up a forest track and surrounded by pine, eucalyptus, orange and lemon trees. The Ralls designed and built this small rural hotel based on a traditional Quinta and the emphasis is on the highest quality in furnishings, fabrics and artistic design. A local carpenter has built polished wooden wardrobes and bathroom wash stands; there are white muslin drapes over the windows and everywhere you'll find pretty hand painted tiles and murals of fruit bowls, flowers and trees. On arrival you enter a central square courtyard planted with fruit trees, while the bedrooms are located all around this orchard, on the ground and upper floors. There is a spacious and light filled open plan lounge, bar (honesty bar fridge for wine, beer and soft drinks) and dining room leading out through French windows to the garden patio. One of the main beauties of Atrio is the gorgeous garden, filled with colourful jasmine, mimosa, daisies and rhododendron bushes with manicured lawns - created by Emmanuelle. You can stroll through this private botanical garden which stretches down the hill to the brook at the bottom of the valley.
Bedrooms The ten bedrooms are all very different individually styled and all with a private patio, or balcony. One room is inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s room or you can choose a four poster bed, a brass bed or a garden suite with a deck chair on the lawn outside your front door. White cotton duvets on the bed and a basket of fresh fruit and bottle of water will be waiting for you. The satellite TV only has news programmes in English - an entertainment music or movie channel would perhaps be welcome. Wicker chairs, fresh flowers and paintings decorate cool and comfortable rooms. Bathrooms are luxurious with huge baths, marble topped wash stands, power showers and thick towels. All bedrooms are non-smoking.
Dining As this is a small hotel – more like a private guest house – the main course for the evening meal is selected by guests in the morning. Then fresh ingredients, fish and meat, can be purchased each day. Much of the fruit, vegetables, salad leaves and herbs – rocket and basil - are grown in the garden. Home made pesto is made from July to October as are breakfast jams. The emphasis then is on hearty home cooked food based on traditional Madeiran dishes. Be warned - the portion size is enormous. Breakfast is served on warm days out on the patio. The buffet is fresh and health conscious.
Leisure Uli Rall is an experienced levada walk guide and is pleased to escort guests on a mountain walk through the World Heritage Laurel forest. Just a few minutes walk from Atrio is a levada walk leading to the next village and you could arrange for a picnic lunch for a good day out. Take a drive down to Calheta Beach for a swim in the sea. Visit Centro das Artes on the cliff above Calheta. At the hotel you can play French boule or take a dip in the lovely heated pool, then relax in the garden. The library has a good selection of English, German and French novels and after dinner perhaps a game of chess.
