This historic estate dates back to the sixteenth century. It was established by the Viscounts of Torre Bela, direct descendants of the first settlers of Madeira. Its private Chapel, built in the 16th century, bears the Coat of Arms of this British family.

Visitors can enjoy the calm pleasures of the garden which has lovely views over the Atlantic Ocean. Its four century old oak tree, one of the oldest on the island, stands in gardens surrounded by cultivated farming lands of banana plantations and exotic fruit trees overlooking the sea.

Various buildings on the property which were the original farm houses surrounded by banana plantations and exotic fruit trees have been rebuilt in their original traditional structure and are available for rural tourism accommodation. All houses have individual bathrooms and equipped kitchenettes. There are outdoor areas for barbequing and there is an ample private parking area. The English speaking owners are present to see to your requests. This is the ideal place to enjoy contact with Nature and to enjoy the fruits in season cultivated on the farm. This is your peaceful getaway in a traditional farming community environment.

Location is Fonte do Til, in Arco da Calheta. It is a 25 minutes drive to Funchal and 45 minutes to the airport. There are cafés, restaurants and a bakery in the local village, 5 minutes walking distance. There is a big supermarket and more restaurants as well as the island’s only golden sandy beach at 3 km distance from the farm.

Casa Antonio - 2 bedrooms (1 double & 1 twin), 2 small shower rooms and a kitchenette/dining area, can be separated by interlocking door. Upstairs terrace with views over cultivated farmlands and the ocean.

The configuration of the hills in a semi-circle, reminding of an arch, ended up by motivating the first settlers to call Arco da Calheta (Calheta arch) to this civil parish in the Calheta municipality. Arco da Calheta civil parish was one of the first places in Madeira Island being colonised and having the first farms established after the island was discovered.

The settlement, manly from Portuguese, took place between 1425 and 1461.

Located by the sea, between Ledo and Luairão streams, Arco da Calheta is circumscribed between the civil parishes of Madalena do Mar, Canhas and Calheta.

Arco da Calheta, separated from Calheta in 1472, established its headquarters at the chapel of S. Brás. The mother church was rebuilt in 1744.

Arco da Calheta has currently around 4,000 inhabitants. Its economic activities include agriculture and cattle breeding, wood sawing, carpentry, blacksmith’s workshops, bread making, blocks manufacture, trade and services.

In terms of climate, the summer is very hot, but the winter is somewhat harsher.
