This is a private villa that offers you the opportunity to live, albeit for only a short while, like a local Funchal resident. This charming, traditional Madeirense house was built in the early 1900s and stands in a wonderful position, tucked away on the hillside, with superb views of the bay of Funchal and a lovely patio, surrounded by exotic flowers, creepers and shrubs with orange, lemon, avocado pear and banana trees in the garden.
Guests enjoy a modern swimming pool with pool furniture. The house has been carefully restored to retain many original features, such as the timbered ceilings and quaint interior window shutters. Yet at the same time, modernization means that the kitchen is complete with a microwave, an eye-level electric oven and a washing machine. Downstairs there is a cloakroom with a shower cubicle and WC, and the living room with cable TV and direct dial telephone, as well as the dining room are are comfortably furnished with good quality furniture and fabrics that are in keeping with the character of the house. Should you encounter an occasional chilly evening, early or late season, then a glorious open log fire, together with a warming glass of the island's famous wine, will soon revive you!
Upstairs, two bedrooms, a double and a twin, share a full modern bathroom and there is a single room with a single bed for one person (if required, one pull out bed available for a 6th person), which can be used as an additional bedroom. On this level a door leads out to a sunny balcony with table and chairs and a couple of sun loungers - the perfect spot to relax, unwind and perhaps have a quiet read.
Guests may park cars on the road right outside the house. Due to the elevated position of the house there is no entrance for cars.
Just outside, you are only a few minutes walk from the local taxi rank, a small local shop selling essentials, a chemist and a restaurant or two. Funchal is a steep thirty-minute, downhill walk (1.5 Km), unless you want to catch the local bus, which stops just 50 metres away. A more colourful alternative is to take the wickerwork toboggan from just around the corner for a breathtaking ride that completes the lower part of the toboggan journey, which starts in Monte, high above.
A 4x weekly maid service is provided.
No pets allowed.
No arrivals on Sundays.
Sleeps 5 adults + 1 child, self catering.
Madeira's capital, Funchal, is an enchanting town set on a glittering bay against a background of soaring green mountains. Winding cobbled streets meander between elegant colonial-style buildings, nestling into the shelter of the verdant hillside. Funchal's historic core overlooks the harbour and features some fine government buildings and stately 18th-century mansions. Its deep natural harbour attracted early settlers in the 15th century.
What to see. The simple whitewashed Sé Cathedral was built between 1486 and 1514. Inside, its main features are the magnificent mudejar ceiling of Madeira cedar wood and the voluptuous Baroque carving of the golden Sacramento chapel to the right of the main altar. Now a museum, the Quinta das Cruzes on Calçada do Pico is the house where the island's discoverer, João Gonçalves Zarco, once lived. Next door is the pretty 16th century church of Santa Clara where he lies buried. The Old Blandy Wine Lodge occupies part of a former Franciscan friary dating back to the 17th century. Guided visits include a tour of the cellars and a wine-tasting session.
Nearby. Opened to the public in 1960, the Botanical Gardens on the edge of town display plants from all over the world, including desert cacti, rainforest orchids and South African proteas. The famous toboggan ride from Monte to Funchal is an exhilarating experience and takes approximately 20 minutes. Madeiran tobogganing was invented as a form of passenger transport around 1850. Much frequented by Sir Winston Churchill in the 1950s, the pretty fishing village of Câmara de Lobos to the west of Funchal offers spectacular views of the world's second-highest sea cliff, Cabo Girão (589 m). Also within easy reach of Funchal is the deep valley location of Curral das Freiras (Nuns' Refuge) near the centre of the island.
