Madeira's capital, Funchal, is an enchanting town set on a glittering bay against a background of soaring green mountains. Winding cobbled streets meander between elegant colonial-style buildings, nestling into the shelter of the verdant hillside. Funchal's historic core overlooks the harbour and features some fine government buildings and stately 18th-century mansions. Its deep natural harbour attracted early settlers in the 15th century. What to see. The simple whitewashed Sé Cathedral was built between 1486 and 1514. Inside, its main features are the magnificent mudejar ceiling of Madeira cedar wood and the voluptuous Baroque carving of the golden Sacramento chapel to the right of the main altar. Now a museum, the Quinta das Cruzes on Calçada do Pico is the house where the island's discoverer, João Gonçalves Zarco, once lived. Next door is the pretty 16th century church of Santa Clara where he lies buried. The Old Blandy Wine Lodge occupies part of a former Franciscan friary dating back to the 17th century. Guided visits include a tour of the cellars and a wine-tasting session.
Nearby. Opened to the public in 1960, the Botanical Gardens on the edge of town display plants from all over the world, including desert cacti, rainforest orchids and South African proteas. The famous toboggan ride from Monte to Funchal is an exhilarating experience and takes approximately 20 minutes. Madeiran tobogganing was invented as a form of passenger transport around 1850. Much frequented by Sir Winston Churchill in the 1950s, the pretty fishing village of Câmara de Lobos to the west of Funchal offers spectacular views of the world's second-highest sea cliff, Cabo Girão (589 m). Also within easy reach of Funchal is the deep valley location of Curral das Freiras (Nuns' Refuge) near the centre of the island.

Pitea, Sweden Review Submitted: June 27, 2010 Date of Stay: June 2010 Are you looking for a place with a magnificent view, directly overlooking the sea as well as the lights from the capital city of Funchal, yet very quiet and peaceful, with excellent customer service coming from the owners and a house fully equipped for every possible need, this is it! Honestly, the first words I uttered coming to the house was: "The pictures don't lie!". I spent a week there with my 80-year-old mother, two sisters and their two daughters. We had a great time together in the house and in the pool, but also not far away in the city and with Mr Maurice, our "private driver" taking us round the island, telling us lots of interesting facts about the island and giving us the names of the plants passing by, in four different languages! We often went by local buses down town and then took a cab back home for 7-8 euros a car. The owners are charming and caring and we loved the house. If ever we come back, we will book this house! Love from Sweden! |

Carlo, Frans and Stefan Geel-Belgie Review Submitted: May 15, 2010 Date of Stay: April 2010 We arrived in the house and were surprised how big it was. A very nice house with lots of opportunities (swimming pool, biljart table, a bar, a large living room and terrace, a kitchen with everything in it an 3 nice large bedrooms. The owners are very concerned. We were unfortunately struck by the volcanic ash cloud of Iceland, but Patricia and Fernando contstantly wanted to be updated on our situation and confirmed to us they would house is when needed or if the filght company wouldn't take care. Patrcia and Fernando, thanks for the lovely period we had !!! |

Clare and Phil Canterbury, Kent, UK Review Submitted: June 12, 2010 Date of Stay: May 2010 This house is outstanding. Its attention to detail is excellent. It is extremely spacious. It has everything you could possibly want - in the kitchen, in the laundry, in the bathroom and in the living areas. There is a games room. The pool is great on a very hot day. If anything the photographs and description don't do it justice. It is, quite simply, first class. The view from the terrace is absolutely stunning. You can look over Funchal (on a Saturday night you can enjoy the fireworks in the harbour), watch the boats go by or sit and watch the sun go down in the evening. Wake up in the mornings, open the curtains and gaze at the blue Atlantic – one day we saw dolphins. If you are reasonably fit you can walk up 101 steep steps to the main road to catch a bus into Funchal (about 10 minutes and 4 euro), walk for about 10 minutes to Zarco’s restaurant (excellent) and where there is a chemist or turn right and walk to Hotel Gardens for a drink/meal. However, to stay here for any length of time you probably need a car, although we were there for a week without one but never ventured further than Funchal. A taxi back from Funchal is about 8 euro. There are no shops in the vicinity. However, and we cannot emphasise this enough, the greatest advantage of this property is its owners. Patricia and Fernando could not have been more courteous, more helpful or more determined for us to enjoy our stay on this island. They can be contacted at any time and will help with anything. If you are ok with staying outside of the capital and away from it – then don’t bother looking at anything else, stay here. |
