The Quinta do Covanco is an estate dating back to the 19th century, situated in the historic municipality of Alenquer and characterised by a rural architectural style, deriving from the farming activities first developed here in the past, most notably the growing of vines. Vila de Alenquer, well known as Vila Presépio, belongs to the Western Region, a region of extensive vineyards and hills crowned with mills between a maritime coast with extensive beaches and the beauty of the Tagus River. It is about 30 km from the beaches of the West region. Is located at the entrance to Vila de Alenquer and 30km from Lisbon. Other historic sites that are worth visiting are Lisbon, Sintra, the Mafra and Queluz Convents, Óbidos, Nazaré, Tomar, Fátima.

After a lovely night’s sleep, there’s nothing like a lovely breakfast where mother Teresa’s homemade cakes and compotes are the highlight – cannot be missed. A stroll through the Quinta could be the next part of the day, or a visit to the historic town Alenquer and Montejunto Mountain, or simply enjoy some of the best Portuguese wines on the Wine trail or the West’s beautiful beaches like Peniche, Santa Cruz, Nazaré and the Berlengas islands – a maritime nature reserve of rare beauty - are particularly noteworthy.

Of Moorish origin, the village of Alenquer was recaptured for the Christians by Dom Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, in the 12th century, in his offensive towards Lisbon, which is only 35 kilometres from Alenquer.

Alenquer is popularly known as the vila-presépio ("crib town"), due to the harmonious layout of its houses on a slope, giving it the shape of an amphitheatre.

Several important figures in the history of Portugal were born in Alenquer, such as Pêro de Alenquer, a 16th century Portuguese navigator who rounded the Cape of Storms (Cape of Good Hope), and Damião de Góis, a great humanist and important figure of the Renaissance in Portugal (17th century).

The main event in this place is the Fair of the Ascension, held annually in May or June (depending on the date of that moveable feast), which attracts many visitors to the region.
