description Description

This typical house from Alentejo is located between the towns of Santiago do Cacém and Cercal do Alentejo, in the hamlet of Vale Seco. Although in a full countryside environment, it is less than 15 minutes drive from the beach of Porto Covo (17 km). From here on, and within few kilometres, you can choose between small beaches or long sandy ones. You can also do a guided visit to the island Ilha do Pessegueiro where one can see remains of the Roman era. The nearest towns are Santiago do Cacém (12 km) and Sines (25 km). Both offer visitors cultural sites, namely the ruins of a Roman town in Santiago do Cacém and the castle of Sines.
For those who enjoy walking, the recently inaugurated route known as Rota Vicentina is within easy reach.
In Santiago do Cacém, Sines and Porto Côvo you will find good quality restaurants serving the region specialties. Closer to the property, at about 2 km, you will find two restaurants with countryside ambience. The nearest supermarket is in Santiago do Cacém, and 800 metres from the property you will find a countryside grocery store where you can buy bread and basic food items, as well as drink a coffee.
It is 150 km from Lisbon airport and 165 km from Faro airport.

The house is the result of a careful restoration of a typical Alentejo country house, and attention was given in preserving the original architecture. It is a welcoming spot, with no luxury but all essentials available, where the countryside quietness rules. The inside furnishings also present some local handicraft details (ie. the bed heads in patches), furniture and other items related to the region traditions. The house comprises 3 bedrooms (1 double with ensuite shower room, 1 double with an extra single bed, 1 twin), living room with TV (Portuguese channels only), traditional fireplace and dining area, fully equipped kitchen and another shower room. Outside, one finds two shaded terraces, barbecue, private salt water swimming pool, garden and pool furniture and parking area, all within nature grounds.

Santiago do Cacém is a peaceful town in the south of Portugal, whose origins date back to remote times. In the Roman period, it was an important town situated on the road linking Lisbon to the Algarve, a factor which greatly contributed to its development.

The definitive Christian conquest of the town took place in the thirteenth century in 1217, being achieved by the forces led by D. Afonso II, although there had been an earlier conquest in 1157 by the Knights Templar. It was around this time that the castle originally founded by the Moors was rebuilt. Other buildings of historical and architectural interest are the thirteenth-century parish church and the seventeenth-century chapel of São Pedro.

No visit to this region would be complete without a trip to the nearby ruins of Miróbriga, an important livestock farming centre and spa in Roman times. The archaeological site includes an important urban nucleus encompassing a hippodrome, several houses (some of which have mural paintings) and a clearly defined acropolis, where the forum and public baths are quite visible.

The Sudoeste Alentejano and Costa Vicentina Natural Park is a majestic sweep of coastline and hinterland that stretches from S. Torpes near Sines in the north to the border of the Algarve in Odeceixe to Sagres and the rural district of Vila do Bispo in the south west.
Declared a protected zone in 1995, it is a wild place of rugged landscape where nature and history combines, creating awesome landscapes.
This is Portugal’s largest protected coastal zone and ironically owes itself to the fact that at the onset of mass tourism in the Algarve in the 1960s developers considered the region too desolate for tourism development so it was spared the high rise buildings and resorts that characterize much of the southern coastline.
The park embraces an area of 74 786 hectares and comprises a vast underwater strip of around 2km parallel to the coast, the mountainous terrain of Serra do Espinhaço and Serra de Monchique, and the western interior region.
The area of the Sudoente Alentejano and Costa Vicentina Natural Park engages several towns and villages. For centuries the population was dedicated to Fishing, Agriculture and livestock farming, however nowadays Tourism is developing and a very important activity, namely in localities as Porto Côvo, Vila Nova de Milfontes and other spots in the Park’s Algarve coastline, not existing practically volume in the industrial sector.
The park has an inventory of around 750 different Flora species, some of them protected and unique in the world, with a mixture of Mediterranean, North-Atlantic and African vegetation.
The west coast is also one of Europe's most important habitats for sea and land birds migrating to and from Africa and more than 200 species are recorded, some of them very rare. Mammals and, of course, sea species are also diversified.
