Property is located in a remote, plush, green and unspoilt area in Raposeira, parish of Fajã da OvelhaCalheta council, on the southernwestern coast of the island at an altitude of 660 mts high, strangely at only 10-15 mns by car from Calheta beach. It is a cosy refurbished cottage fitted out with all the modern amenities expected in a holiday home and is situated at the end of a wobbly winding country lane with only some bucolic pastures, an inviting  swimming pool and cultivated small lots of tenant farming separating it from the wide blue Atlantic ocean yonder.  The views are, in a word, breathtaking. The evening sunsets are photographers  dream and the days are quiet, lazy, uncomplicated and very, very, far away from that madding crowd...

In 300 m there is a minimarket and a coffee shop. Several restaurants and shopping spots are five minutes away by car, in Prazeres. Supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, and other amenities are about 10-15 minutes away by car, in Calheta.  It is recommended, indeed, required to rent a car so as not to depend on  taxis or busses that are further removed from the property than would be comfortable to walk up to.

The cottage is a picture of how pretty a formerly old and abandoned cottage can look like after being carefully  restored and refurbished. It is a well renovated structure comprising two floors in the older part of the house. In the new attachment a further extra bedroom and toilet facilities has been installed.   There is a family size barbecue in the small  amphitheatre style atrium between the house and the swimming pool. The  outside living area is located on a wooden deck and has its own garden chairs and parasols. There is ample garden space with awesome sea  views that nestle next to cultivated lots of land. The charm of the area is its simple quiet natural feel about it. There is plenty of  walking to do along trails and levadas making a stay of at least two weeks  necessary to explore the many different routes and beauty spots to be discovered in the area.

With a living area of 220 m², it comprises kitchen communicating with the  combined living room and dining room area (cable TV, stereo, open fireplace), 1 double bedroom in new annex with  en suite bathroom, 1 twin bedroom sharing bathroom, 1 bedroom with two double bunk beds, 1 loft double bedroom in the gallery overlooking the living room area, 1 bathroom on the ground floor, solarium deck terrace with chairs and  parasol, swimming pool, barbecue, exterior wooden table and chairs in barbecue area, garden and parking available nearby (on street).  Baby cot(s) available on request.

Activities such as sailing, fishing, walking, surfing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, paragliding are all available in the Calheta area. In some of the larger hotels  special activities can be enjoyed such as thalasso-therapy, water massage, saunas, tennis, squash, volleyball, spa baths, bio-sauna, nudist sun tanning deck at the Jardim Atlântico Hotel, haute cuisine, jeep safaris, golf (soon), and so on.  There are quite a few levadas in the surrounding area. The walk down to the picturesque fishing villages of Jardim do Mar and Paúl do Mar is especially invigorating.  The climb down and back up requires some steady footing and gear!

The beauty it offers is in the origin of the name (pleasure, in English).

The civil parish arises from the original headquarters of the ecclesiastic parish, the chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, built there long before the ecclesiastic parish was created.

Prazeres stands out as being a wide terrace. From here apparently distant places can be seen, in perfect combination with the ocean, a unique meeting point between land and sea, making Prazeres one of the most picturesque parishes on the island.

Originally connected to the Estreito da Calheta parish, Prazeres became independent along with some farmhouses of Fajã da Ovelha on December 18, 1676.

The parish is washed by several streams: Ribeiro de Inês, Ribeira do Batel and Ribeira da Lombada and is crossed and irrigated by the Levada do Rabaçal watercourse.

It has a pleasant climate with mild temperatures all year round. Due to its location, the winters are not very harsh and the summers are hot.

How to Get There

From Funchal, take the freeway in the direction of Ribeira Brava (Funchal – Ribeira Brava). Take the Ribeira Brava turnoff.

Follow the signposts to Calheta and Prazeres.
