description Description

An original farmhouse which was carefully renovated between 1998 and 2000. It is located 200 m from the small hamlet of Amaro-Gonçalves, 8 km from the beautiful city of Tavira. Near the beaches and the most important towns of eastern Algarve, this is a perfect location. Some of the most beautiful beaches of Algarve are located in this area, in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa: Praia do Barril 5 km, Praia da Armona (Fuzeta) 4 km, Praia da Terra Estreita (Santa Luzia) 8 km, Praia da Ilha de Tavira 12 km. Guesta staying at any of these two houses benefits from a 50% reduction in the prices of 1 sunshade and 2 sun loungers at the concession “Guenan” on the beach of the Armona Island (Fuzeta). It is 30 km to Faro airport. A rental car is strongly recommended.

During the renovation works particular attention was given to maintaining the architectonic characteristic elements while introducing the comforts of a modern vacation property. As a result of the renovation, the original house was divided into two semidetached houses which can be rented separately or together. Both houses have their own terrace with tables, sun loungers and parasols. From the terraces one reaches a large garden with different fruit trees and herbs. Guests are welcome to pick the fruits they wish during the season. Under an old ancient olive tree there is a barbecue appropriate to grill the fresh fish that can be bought in the nearby fish markets. The grounds have parking place for three vehicles.

The house Casa Velha comprises 1 double room (15 m2), 1 room with a bunkbed (10 m2), living room with open fireplace (20 m2), 1 shower room (9 m2), large open plan kitchen with dining area (20 m2), and its own terrace.

Sleeps 4 adults + 2 children, self catering.

edit_location Location - Area

A humid zone of international importance, the Ria Formosa estuary is a labyrinth of canals, islands, marshland and sandy beaches that extend 60 km along the Algarve coast between the beaches of Garrão and Manta Rota.

This diversity of eco-systems attracts a varied range of animal life including many bird species. One of the rarest species is the purple swamphen, the symbol of their Natural Park that cannot be found in any other part of the country. Visitors who would like to admire the elegant plumage of this bird and learn everything about the protected area, should start their visit in the Marim Environmental Education Centre, that will indicate the most appropriate pedestrian trails and observatories where it is possible to spy on the day-to-day activities of the various species. The Park also organises various rides in a traditional boat that was formerly used for tuna fishing.

One of the most friendly species that can be found here is the Portuguese water dog. This is a long-haired dog, which helps fishermen in their work, by diving and catching fish caught in the nets.

Other traditional activities of the local population living in the estuary area include extraction of salt and gathering of shellfish and bivalves (mussels, oysters, clams, razor etc). These are then used with great skill and art in order to create delicious gastronomical specialities, such as fish soup or razor fish rice, that can be enjoyed calmly in the seaside restaurants.

All those who love the sun and sea, will encounter genuine paradises in the islands located in the Ria Formosa estuary. From west to east, we find the islands of Faro, Barreta, Culatra, Armona and Tavira, with extensive stretches of sand and relatively deserted. In order to round off the trip, it's well worth visiting Cacela Velha, a white town with a notable historical heritage. From the top of the fortress, there are spectacular views of the surroundings – mingling together the blue tones of the estuary, sea and sky.

We stayed there for a week at the end of May 2017. For us it was a little paradise! An enclosed garden where our toddlers can roam free, orange trees that supplied us with endless amount of orange juice. The garden in in two parts, half is beautifully landscape and half is an orchard with all sorts of trees to provide some fruits all year round. The house itself has well equipped kitchen, a large bathroom, good size lounge and bedrooms. The terrace is large, part undercover. We ate and spent the evening there listening to crickets, peacocks, cats and dogs and enjoying our wine The area is very peaceful countryside. There is a small but well stocked village shop just up the road where you can get all necessities. the nearest restaurant is right by Ria Farmosa pretty much straight down towards the sea. It is walking distance but not nearby. We had bikes and cycled to Tavira, Moncarapacho, Santo Elvadao, Fuzeta. At times we had to push them up the steeper hills but it was part of the fun. Marco, the owner has a restaurant in Tavira which is very good. We didn't need to contact them but his mum popped in a few times to tidy the orchard. We can't wait to go back!

We had an enjoyable stay at the Casa Campo Velha in May 2017. The villa was excellent value for money and I would recommend it to a friend for a quiet, relaxing holiday in the Algarve. The description of the villa is accurate although it is semi-detached property. There was another couple staying next door when we stayed but there was ample private terrace and garden space so we didn't even notice them.

Best things about the villa:

1) quiet, rural setting - unspoilt Algarve

2) fresh orange juice (oranges picked from the grove)

3) BBQ and well equipped kitchen

4) personal touches on arrival (fresh flowers/herbs) and friendly owner

5) wildlife

Things to consider if choosing this villa:

1) no air conditioning

2) need good directions to the villa as it is off the beaten track

3) no pool

4) need a car

If you are thinking of staying here a car is essential to access local shops and to visit towns such as Tavira (although the roads and driveway leading to the property are narrow so dont hire anything too wide!). Directions - we found that it was easiest to follow the signs to Fundo off the N125 between Pinheiro and Luz de Tavira, then take the second narrow (steel-pipe-sided) bridge on the right. The villa was approximately the 3rd property on the left and the keys could be obtained from Maria next door further up the road in the white house with blue doors and windows (as in the owners instructions).

The owners were very friendly and accommodating and provided us with directions to the best restaurants and places to visit. Tavira and Olhao were very pretty and it was easy to buy fresh meat, fish and vegetables to cook at the villa. Alcoutim on the Spanish border was also idyllic and not too far away. The beaches on the Ilha de Tavira and Ilha de Armona are superb and not to be missed!

In summary, this villa is ideal for independent couples or small families wanting to see the unspoilt Algarve. It is comfortable but not luxurious or fussy, rural but not remote. We had a great time.
