17th century farmhouse set in 25 acres of gardens, with superb views over the Douro River. The approach is on a lovely winding track through the grounds. The property, with its orange, lemon and olive groves, has been in the same family for several generations. The many prints, sketches and photographs lining the walls tell their own history of this Port wine region of Portugal. Located in Baião, the property is 70km from the coast and Porto (home of the Port wine cellars and with its town centre designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site). You will enjoy total privacy in a fully modernised house but still with its unique atmosphere, overlooking the most magnificent views. Possibility of transfer from/to Porto airport by previous arrangement, as well as guided sightseeing or wine tasting tours throughout Douro Valley’s Port wine producing estates and further up the river to the Foz Coa palaeolitical rock carvings, described by specialists as the biggest outdoor history museum.  In 10 minutes drive you will find some nice restaurants and supermarket.

The fully modernized house consists of a lounge with large fireplace, satellite TV, video, free internet access, books from previous visitors, Douro books, general information about the area, specially about Port wine , air conditioning in the corridor, 4 double rooms, all with small verandas with superb river views, 2 shower rooms, a fully fitted kitchen with four gas rings, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, coffee machine, kettle, oven, toaster, large fridge and freezer and utility room with ironing facilities, starters for wash and dish machines.  Outside, one enjoys a very private area with large private swimming pool (10mx5m , depth 1m-2m), sun loungers, gas barbecue area with garden furniture, tables, chairs, parasols and table tennis.

Should anything be missing, the English and French speaking property owner lives in a separate house within the same rural estate.

For stays of more than one week, a weekly cleaning and change of bed linen and towels is included.

This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy this unspoilt region of Portugal and discover the environment in which Port Wine has been produced for centuries, from the tranquil atmosphere of our Quinta, where you can pick your own oranges for fresh juice every morning. Relax, unwind and immerse yourself in the peace and quiet that this unique property offers.

The estate is ideal for artists, families or groups of friends, with its combination of total privacy, superb views and close location to the historic city of Porto, and the Port Wine producing estates. All three are classified as UNESCO world heritage sites.

For your comfort we can organise transfer from/to Porto airport and tailor-made tours, for an additional cost, so that you get to know the best of our beloved valley and its many attractions.

The boat cruises from Régua to Pinhão and back (with optional lunch on board) are highly recommended to see the Douro Valley and we can book these for you.

From Régua we can recommend bus trips to visit wonderful views of the area and local Port wine producers to taste the famous Port wine produced at Douro Valley.

The house is served by train, with a main station close the house. We recommend a train trip to Régua or Pinhão or further to admire all of the Douro Valley. Also possible are walking tours, fishing, river cruises, golf, or just relaxing by the pool gazing at the view, enjoying a glass of local wine.

A beautiful and charming old farmhouse set in acres of private grounds, ideal for a completely "away-from-it-all" escape.

The house feels authentic and cosy, instantly homely and very clean. The living area is on the main upper floor with a large lounge-dining room, main bathroom, kitchen, bathroom/toilet and the bedrooms. These four bedrooms are all in a line off one side of the central hall/corridor with their own little veranda and stunning views. There is a larger double, two standard ones, and a small double (cosy for 2).

Below are two big old stone-walled rooms, windowless, with table tennis and pool inflatables in one and loads of books, historical and local info etc in the second - as well as the essential second (drinks) fridge and the free local wine...!

The pool area is at least as wonderful as it looks in the pictures - you can lounge under the olive tree with endless river views in total privacy - and the little seat under the tree at the other end of the house is a top spot for lording it over the valley, unseen...

Beyond these areas the huge grounds are great to wander quietly, whether to pick oranges or lemons on the terraces below the house, stalk the many and varied butterflies in the woods and open grassy areas or just enjoy all your private space and views.

In terms of local attractions we didn't do much (bliss) but the Quinta is within 1 hr of Porto and various small towns, and the cave art sites are a 6 hr return trip.

Lastly but by no means least, Francisco is your warm and friendly host who makes it just that little bit better again. Welcoming from the start, proud of his old family home and helpful when booking the local restaurant and quietly emptying the outside recycling bins, yet never intrusive. He lives in a small property adjacent to the grounds and is available for any query/information/assistance - particularly useful if you speak as little Portuguese as we did...

In terms of down-sides there is very little to complain about indeed. There is an air-con in the corridor, but if you are sensible with shutters in the daytime and open windows at night it never gets too hot, and feels more authentic in any case. Also the Quinta is relatively remote (though you can hear a few sounds from the local town): no quick walk to the shops or bar/restaurant, more a 10 minute drive on the windy local roads - but this is part of the charm in many ways.

Overall I can't recommend this Quinta enough and we have firm plans to return...
